Drafts Functionality Updates in Figma

Here’s what to expect

For users on a Starter or Professional team, the location of drafts is changing. Starting this week, users will be asked to move their drafts into a team space.

  • Your drafts are now located in a space called “Drafts to move.”
  • You can transfer your drafts all at once into the appropriate teams, or create a free Starter team to house all your drafts.
  • When you move your drafts to a team, they will remain private.
  • You can continue to create and edit drafts at no cost.
  • This update will be rolled out over the next few days, so you may not see the prompt immediately.

The reason behind this change

In redesigning the system, it was found that the current drafts model—where drafts exist outside of teams—leads to unclear ownership, lack of team association, and inconsistent user experiences.

For example, the draft model on Starter and Professional plans differs from that on Organization and Enterprise plans, hindering the ability to enhance the product experience.

When drafts aren’t linked to a team, users miss out on paid features like advanced prototyping, password protection, and Dev Mode.

Additionally, design work outside a team can pose security and IP risks. The existing drafts model blurs the lines between personal and professional drafts, leading to ambiguous file permissions and potential loss of files.

What remains unchanged

Despite the relocation of drafts, their functionality will remain consistent:

  • Drafts will remain private to you and those you share them with.
  • You can still create and edit your drafts for free.
  • On a Starter team, you can invite unlimited viewers to collaborate on your drafts and have unlimited editors on up to three collaborative files.

Moving Your Drafts

When navigating to “Drafts to move,” you’ll find instructions to relocate files into a drafts space within a team of your choice.

For personal projects that aren’t related to any of your teams, you can create a free Starter team and move your files into its drafts space.

To ensure your ongoing work isn’t disrupted, you can still edit your drafts in the “Drafts to Move” space alongside existing collaborators. However, if you want to invite additional collaborators, you’ll need to move the file into a team.

There’s no specific deadline for transitioning your drafts. At some point in the future, any drafts that haven’t been moved will be migrated to a new, free Starter plan. Prior notice will be given before this change takes effect.
